Task: Design a cover for Kurt Vonnegut’s Player Piano which is evocative of the plot and theme of the book.
Process: Because Player Piano is in a dystopian setting (my least favorite form of sci-fi), I decided to go with a monochromatic cover to reflect the bleak setting. Additionally, because machinery is so integral to the plot, I created a background pattern of interlocking gears, and lined the bottom of the cover with vacuum tubes. All is not well in Vonnegut’s world of machines, which is reflected on the cover with one of the vacuum tubes now broken and useless.
